The Codex Gigas

The Codex Gigas, a.k.a 'The Devils' Bible' is a giant book which has the entire Bible written in it alongwith some more information, of wars, spells and the procedure of exorcism. 

It was created somewhere around the 13th century by a monk of Benedictine monastery in Bohemia, Czech Republic. The book is around 36 inches long, 20 inches wide and 8.7 inches thick and weighing upto 74 kg.

It's completely in Latin, indeed the word Codex Gigas means 'Giant book' in Latin. It has the complete handwritten Bible and wars fought along with some drawings. It got its name, The Devils's Bible due to a picture of the devil on one of the pages.

It is said that it's the work of only a single man. The book contains around 310 pages in total (in the beginning it had 320 pages, but the last 10 were lost within the years).

Now starts the interesting part about the book. The pages of the book are not any ordinary one. The entire book's pages are made from the skin of donkeys. Around 160 donkeys were killed for the book.

It is said that the person who created this book was himself a monk of that monastery who did something against the laws of the monastery for which he was sentenced to be walled up alive. He asked for mercy and gave his word that he would write a manuscript which will contain all the available information till then, along with the Bible, in just one night which in turn will be the thing of attraction for their monastery.

The authorities agreed to this, as they knew it was not possible. He begin his work of completing the book of the century but as midnight showed, he understood that it was not possible to complete it  in one night so he asked for help from the hell. The devil heard his call and wrote the entire book within one night.  

Information is not available what happened with the monk but the manuscript was kept in that monastery which in turn, brought downfall of the monastery so they have to give it to other monastery.

There also the book brought destruction. An epidemic spread in their town. Later it was added to the book collections of King Rudolf II and after that the Swedish army invaded the kingdom and took the book alongwith them.

Later a fire broke out in the castle where it was kept and to protect it from the fire a servant threw it out of the window and it landed directly on the ground due to which its binding became loose. Today the book is resting in the National library of Stockholm.

Scientist have examined the entire book and there is also a documentary by National Geographic channel regarding it. At the end they came to a conclusion that the book indeed is the work of a single person but they doubt that the real story is not the same as everyone knows. They added that the monk's punishment might have been decreased to lifetime imprisonment.

He knew that he will never be able to see the world again so he gathered his entire knowledge and gave it the form of a manuscript. 

But the thing that contradict this theory is the handwriting, which remains the same throughout the book. It is said that if a single person wrote it with the drawings, then it would have took him around 30 years and in that case his handwriting in the beginning and at the end can't be same because he, as well as he would have grown old which itself makes difficult to maintain the handwriting.

One more thing is, the 10 pages which were lost. It is said that they contained the procedure of summoning the devil into the living world but the pages are still missing till date.

The Flatwoods Monster

From the starting I have been writing about the urban legends which exist or were rumored to exist on Earth, so this time I thought of writing about a legend from the 'Outer Space'. This legend is known as the 'Flatwoods Monster'.

This thing was spotted on 12th September, 1952 in the Flatwoods in Braxton city near West Virginia, USA.

Not much known appearances were available about this things except for the first time it made a cameo.

At around 7:00 p.m three people Edward May, Fred May and Tommy Hyer spotted a bright light in the night sky, which according to them crashed in the forest. They reported it to Kathleen May who called the locals Neil Henley, Ronnie Shaver alongwith West Virginia National Guardsman, Eugene Lemon.

As they headed towards the forest their noses captured a unique odour and a bright light which was coming from the trees. They even reported they saw two round red light behind the trees and when they aimed the flashlight towards it they saw a tall thing( around 10 feet tall) with two big red eyes staring at them. The face was covered by a hood which was like it was wearing a leaf at its back.

The thing ran deep in the woods and the search party ran towards the town. This story spread like fire and the investigation began in the woods for the creature.

The Flatwoods monster was never seen after that but the incident was tried to cover up. According to Joe Nickell(member of Committee for Skeptical Inquiry), the bright light witnessed by the people was a meteor and the red light was the beacon of an aircraft since there were investigations regarding an crashed aircraft.

Regarding the monster Joe concluded that the monster resembles much to that of an owl who might have stuck itself in some leaf and the rest which they have seen might be their imagination due to anxiety.

Whatever the conclusion maybe but it's for sure that there was something there that night which was definitely not an owl and if that's so then it's possible that aliens might have already begun visiting the planet and they are not only limited to 'Area 51'.

August Lady

                                                                                                                                                                          


This legend of the 'August Lady' is from one of the remote areas of America. The exact location is not known because this tale is from long ago and it happened with a 12 year old boy.

In the place where this boy used to live was another house in which a new family had moved in. The family's name was Evans and like it happens in every haunted story Evans were a also a strange family. They never had any connection with anybody else in the neighbourhood. They were only limited to their work and themselves.

Rumors began to spread regarding Evans that they perform Black Magic, due to this people also began to stay away from Evans family.

Now coming to the main part of the story. The room in which this 12 year old boy used to live had a window which faced the Evans's house and he could see an old lady sitting by the window.

The lady was paralyzed and she couldn't move, so she had a wheelchair. Every night she used to come by the window and stare from it. The appearance of this old lady was so scary that the boy began sleeping on the floor so that she couldn't see him.

He often told his parents about it but they covered the matter by saying that, the lady might see the him as his grandson or maybe she just wanted to look outside that's why she used to sit by the window.

Then one night there began a hustle in the Evans's house. A car was called and Evans took the old lady somewhere. It is not known where they took her but later the news came that the old lady died. Evans also left the house.

One evening when the boy returned from his basketball practice, he went to have a shower. That evening he was the only one in his house because his parents had gone to attend his sister's function at her school.

While he was showering and as soon as he removed the foam from his face, he saw the same old lady wearing a white gown her hair were opened and she was floating in the air in front of him and was laughing at him. 

"August, August, August." She said thrice. The boy couldn't understand what was happening. He somehow escaped from there and ran to his friend's house. He called his parents and the police but they found nothing.

He became more scared to be alone but with time everything became normal. He even married to a girl but then curiosity arose inside him to know about the old lady and the Evans family. On investigation he came to know that the old lady was once a very beautiful woman whose husband died very soon.

Her husband's name was August and when he saw the photographs it was almost like everything slipped away from his feet. August used to look exactly like the boy and this boy's wife looked like that old lady when she was young.

Things became much worse after that. He used to have panic attacks and used to see the old lady almost everyday. Then one day his wife went missing and no one was ever able to found her. She had left a note on which only 'August' was written.

The Call Of the night

Nishi Daak, a Bengali word which when translated is known as 'The Call Of the Night'.  It's a kind of black magic which is said to be performed in the parts of West-Bengal. 

Black magic is not banned because it is used to counter evil forces however there are some people who use it for their evil purpose.

Nishi Daak is a type of black magic where an evil spirit is summoned and is sent to the prey. The spirit calls the name of the victim and if the victim turns back then the spirit will extract the spirit of the victim and will take it to its master. Then the person can use it in any way he wants.

There is not always that there is a person behind Nishi Daak, there may be a spirit directly involved in it.

There is no particular way to escape except of not looking back, but the thing is, the spirit will call it's prey name in the voice of it's close ones and during the night and it's  a natural reaction to turn back.

But if you somehow don't turn back, wait until you hear your name till 5 times. It's not sure whether responding will get you caught you or not otherwise you could easily call the person to come in front of you. If it will really be your relative or friend he will come to you otherwise never!

Another way is to avoid going to deserted places during the night and that also lonely because the spirit will only attack when you are lonely. 

The cursed tourist spot.

It's been a very long time since I wrote any blog. Well the reason is, I try to write about those legends which most of the people are not aware of. That's the reason I also include the legends of different countries but as we progress, the list is shortlisted.

Well this time I thought of writing about a legend of my own country. Moving to the west in the largest state in terms of area, Rajasthan. Well, whenever we hear about any legend and that also from Rajasthan then the first one which comes to our mind is Bhangarh Fort.

But this is not about The Bhangarh Fort, but  this one is about an abandoned village Kuldhara. Situated at a distance of 18 kms from Jaisalmer, this village is said to be abandoned for more than 170 yrs.

So what's new in this? Many places and villages are there who had been abandoned. I agree to that but the difference between them and Kuldhara is that Kuldhara can never be civilized again.

The reason behind this, is a curse which was given to the village by it's own people. The story of Kuldhara is like this.

Kuldhara itself was an advanced village whose people have learned the techniques to have vegetation in the deserts. It is said that the people who established this village were called as Paliwals, and it was because of them that civilization began in the deserts of India.

However, the Paliwals were the ones who cursed this village. It is said by the locals that once the Diwan of Kuldhara fell in love with one of the girl of the village. He was so madly lost in love that he even gave a warning to the residents of the village that either they give him the girl or he will have her by force by the next full moon night and will kill anyone who comes in his path

A meeting was called and the Panchayat was stuck whether to save the girl or their village. At last they decided that they will leave their village along with that girl. Before leaving, the Paliwal's cursed their village that no one will ever be able to start civilization again in their village. 

They all evacuated the village on the same night leaving the village with the curse with stands till today.

Today Kuldhara has become a tourist place but only during the day. At night nobody dares to enter this village. The tourist has also confirmed that during the daytime also they can hear the voices of people, and he noise of women's ornaments.

People have even tried to civilize this village but none of them were successful.The locals also say that some people who entered Kuldhara never returned back.

This place has also been visited by Paranormal Experts who claimed that they felt the presence of  some energy around them while they were researching. When they were returning back, their car's window glasses were filled with hand prints of small children which was very strange phenomenon because there were no houses around there so there was no chance of any human's presence.

Voices have also been recorded at that place when the paranormal experts were trying to communicate with the spirits.

The Sins Eater

Today I am not going to talk about any urban legend because I am totally out of them this week. I have been surfing the net in search of urban legend which are available in our country and have also found some but I am going to need some time for their research.

But the good thing which happened with was that I came to know about a thing, better say a wonder which was present among us but we never heard of it. This thing doesn't comes under the category of a legend, but as per my opinion but it should be listed in the category.

It's 'The Knocking Thief' . This thing is actually in the formation of a rock. A giant rock which hangs on the wall of a cave, without any support.

The history of the thief is related to the 'Ramayana' period and specially during the time when Lord Rama was under banishment in order to maintain the dignity of his father's words which he gave to his third wife Kaikeyi.

During this period Lord Rama, his brother Lakshman and wife Sita were residing in the forest of Chitrakoot which was at the bank of Mandakini river. 

Attached to the bank is a cave called 'Secret Godavari' and is also the home of The Knocking thief.

The locals basically calls it by the name 'Khatkhata Chor'. Experts says that, Sita used to take bath in the pool inside the cave until one day a demon named Mayank entered the cave when Sita was taking a bath and stole her clothes.

To this Sita became angry, pulled a strap of hair from her head and cursed the demon that he will become a rock. After receiving the curse, the demon starting regretting and asked Sita for mercy telling that if he will become a rock then he will not be able to eat and will die. When she saw that the demon really had a regret for his deeds she gave him a boon that he will stay alive by eating the sins of the people who will come to this cave and will be there in this cave till the end of the world.

If you ever get a chance to visit this cave in Chitrakkot then don't forget to visit 'The Knocking thief' and also don't forget to do a lot of sins before your visit so that his hunger can be satisfied.

It is said that if you touch that rock piece then it makes a noise similar to that when someone gives a knock on the door, and that's why it received the name as Khatkhata Chor. 

It is also said that whoever visits this cave then no thief can ever enter his house. This is one of the blessing of the demon to the people whoever comes to him and satisfies his hunger.

The bathtub game

This legend is once again regarding a game, and when I said game it's obvious that it is a death game. However the risk in this game is less than that of  'The Elevator Game'. So this legend is from Japan and it's name is Daruma-San game.

In Japan, Daruma dolls are known as the symbol of good luck and are found in every house but this game is nowhere related to these dolls. This game is actually a way to call spirits from the other world. I don't know why and how this game originated but its really dangerous to play this game.

Coming to the detail about this game.This is game is played at night in a bathroom which have a bathtub. The person playing this game should switch off all the lights of the bathroom and the bathtub should be filled with water.

The person will have to then sit in the bath the tub and have to wash their hair and say continuously  "Daruma- San fall down" thrice with their eyes closed. On the third spell the person will feel that something fell from above but the person mustn't open their eyes because it's the spirit they have summoned.

Once this part is completed the person has to move out of the bathtub with their eyes closed. The person mustn't flush the water of the bathtub till  the next morning and mustn't look back because the spirit is going to lure them to do so.

Once the bathroom part is over the person must go to sleep or whatever he wants except for going inside the bathroom.

From the next day the person begins to feel that someone is following him. The spirit will try to harm the person in a number of manner but the person should avoid looking back and will have to run to escape the spirit. This is what this game is all about. You will have to run from the spirit.

If you feel that you no longer want to play this game with the spirit then you will have say "Kita". It's a Japanese word which means 'I cut you lose'. But if the person had done a mistake in the ritual of calling the spirit then this is not going to work and the spirit will be following you until you die.It may even try to kill you.
